Why is it that I know so much about earning so little as a writer?
Just three years ago, I made a “comfortable” $30,052 a year from my freelance writing. Honestly, I was quite proud! I was certainly doing better than so many others making only $5,000 a year.
My perspective changed during a writers’ conference. I listened to a colleague talk about how he made $220,000 a year – sometimes more! I did a double-take. $220,000 a year? Suddenly my comfortable $30,000 didn’t feel so comfortable.
Until that moment, it hadn’t occurred to me that I could earn so much more than I was. I was so focused on the $5,000 bar that I had completely lost sight of the REAL POTENTIAL of this profession.

I was the only one holding myself back from making a six-figure income. I started by making some changes to my marketing approach and to my time management system in order to bring in more business and get it done.
My income steadily rose, from $30,000 in 2004 to $98,000 in 2005 and $135,000 in 2006. This year I expect to do even better. And what I did wasn’t revolutionary, nor was it hard. But the results changed how I do business and how I live.
As a result of changes I made, I now:
- Query less
- Get more assignments without pitching
- Make more money per assignment
- Write about topics that interest me
Now that I know first-hand how easy it is to become a six-figure freelance writer, I want to share what I’ve discovered with you.
It’s my gift to you – from one writer to another.
